Ceramic Coating in San Diego

A chemical bond that protects your paint for years — not months. Three tiers, one standard of installation.

What it actually is

Ceramic coating is not wax. Not even close.

Traditional carnauba wax sits on top of your paint as a sacrificial layer. It's soft, it degrades in UV, and it washes away in weeks. A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that chemically bonds to your vehicle's factory clear coat. It doesn't sit on top — it becomes part of it. The result is a semi-permanent layer that doesn't wash off, doesn't degrade in San Diego's relentless UV, and doesn't require monthly reapplication.

What ceramic coating does: it blocks UV radiation (99%), repels water and contaminants through a hydrophobic effect, resists minor chemical etching from bird droppings and acid rain, and adds measurable hardness to the clear coat surface. What it doesn't do: it does not provide physical impact protection against rock chips. That's what paint protection film is for. For vehicles with significant freeway exposure, the correct solution is PPF on the front end and ceramic over the rest.

Ceramic coating also magnifies your paint's finish — the gloss depth and clarity it produces over properly corrected paint is something no wax or sealant can replicate. But that's a consequence of the chemistry, not the goal. The goal is protecting an asset you paid for.

The process

We obsess over prep because prep is the coating.

This is how every ceramic coating job runs at Apex Auto Studio, from assessment to delivery.

01

Paint Assessment

We check paint thickness, depth, and existing defects under calibrated lighting. No guessing — we know exactly what we're working with before we start.

02

Decontamination

Iron decontamination spray, clay bar treatment, and pH-neutral wash. Removes industrial fallout, brake dust, and bonded contamination the eye can't see.

03

Paint Correction

Machine polishing removes defects from the clear coat. The tier you choose determines the thoroughness of this stage — and it's the most important one.

04

IPA Wipe-Down

Isopropyl alcohol panel wipe removes any polishing oils, ensuring a 100% clean surface for coating adhesion.

05

Coating Application

Ceramic applied panel by panel in our dust-free, temperature-controlled bays. Proper flash time respected between sections.

06

Cure & Inspection

24–48 hour cure under controlled conditions. Final inspection under 5,000K lighting before delivery. Every panel. Every time.

Why it matters here

San Diego is one of the hardest environments on unprotected paint.

With 266+ sunny days per year and a UV index that regularly reaches 8–11 during summer months, San Diego delivers more cumulative UV radiation to your paint than nearly any other major US metropolitan area. UV degrades clear coat at the molecular level, causing oxidation, fading, and chalking that starts within 3–5 years of unprotected exposure. A ceramic coating blocks 99% of UV radiation from reaching the paint.

Add the marine layer moisture and salt particulate from coastal proximity, the seasonal Santa Ana winds that carry abrasive mineral dust, and the industrial fallout that accumulates in any urban parking environment — and the case for ceramic coating in San Diego is about math, not indulgence. The question isn't whether your paint will degrade. It's whether you'll protect it before it does.

Step before coating

Fix dents before they get locked in.

Ceramic coating bonds permanently over whatever's underneath — including dents. Dent removal should always happen before your coating appointment.

Finishing touch

Protect the freshly painted finish.

If you're also painting your calipers or wheels, we apply the ceramic coating over the new paint as part of the same service. A natural sequence.
